New Yackandandah Extension Opens on Murray to Mountains Rail Trail

Discover the Expanded Murray to Mountains Rail Trail: A New Adventure Awaits in Victoria’s High Country

Cycling enthusiasts now have an exciting new reason to explore the iconic Murray to Mountains Rail Trail in Victoria’s picturesque High Country.  (See Map below)

The trail’s recent extension, reaching the charming town of Yackandandah from Beechworth, adds nearly 32 kilometers of premium off-road cycling. This eagerly anticipated addition was made possible by a $5.2 million investment from the Victorian Government.

The new segment of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail connects Beechworth to Yackandandah, with an additional route branching off to Osborne’s Flat. The extension was meticulously completed in seven phases, incorporating nine new bridges, an elevated boardwalk, and a mixed-surface path that offers stunning water views.

Cyclists traveling from Beechworth to Yackandandah will enjoy a gentle downhill ride, with the option of bike shuttles for the return journey, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy the local culinary delights.

Spanning 180 kilometers, the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail is now one of Australia’s premier off-road cycling experiences. Starting in Wangaratta, easily accessible by train, the trail offers various detours to Milawa, Beechworth, and Yackandandah, or cyclists can ride through the scenic farmlands and valleys to the vibrant town of Bright.

“The North East is rapidly becoming a top destination for trail cycling, and this new extension of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail will further enhance its appeal, attracting even more visitors to the region,” said Jaclyn Symes, Member for Northern Victoria.
