Adelaide Bike Tour – The Best Way to Explore Adelaide
There are a number of choices when considering an Adelaide bike tour, and these are:
1. Cycle in and around Adelaide city itself. Adelaide has a good network of cycling paths and the city itself has good laneways dedicated to cyclists. Being pretty much flat, cycling Adelaide city is relatively easy, and whilst peak hour can hold some traffic, outside of these hours it is a joy. and there is plenty to sip, sample and explore in Adelaide and by using a bike as your key mode of transport, you take all the stress out of travel, not to mention the expense and the health benefits.
2. Cycle along the River Torrens to the beachside suburbs of Glenelg and the hip suburb of Henley. If you like an easy, scenic ride following a dedicated bike path that meanders along a river bank, finishing at a beautiful surf beach, then this is the choice for you. The ride from downtown Adelaide to Glenelg is approximately 30kms, literally flat, and very scenic. Glenelg has a big range of places to grab a drink, coffee, lunch or perhaps a vino as you overlook the beachside seascape. And the best part, there is a tram service from Glenelg back to the city that you can sneak your bike onto if you can’t be bothered cycling back (or have too many vinos!!).
3. Your third option when considering an Adelaide bike tour, is to cycle some of the outer regions of the city. One of the big attractions of Adelaide is the proximity and variety of regions outside the city itself. Here’s a few suggestions:
Cycling the Adelaide Hills – Adelaide bike tour
Beautiful Adelaide Hills is only 30-40mins drive east of the city, or if a keen cyclist a fantastic ride and very popular with weekend warriors in lycra. A famous wine region and is also dotted with world class cheese, chocolate making and popular Handorff village on the southern edge of the region. The Adelaide Hills also has the Amy Gillet cycling trail, another relatively flat off road paved track ideal for a casual day of cycling.
Cycling in the Barossa – Adelaide bike tour
Or you can even do a day tour of the Barossa on bike. About 1 1/2 hours drive, the Barossa is a fantastic place for cycling with an extensive network of cycling paths. The Barossa Trail runs from Nuriopta all the way to Gawler, with plenty of food and wine to explore in between. this makes for an ideal day tour and there are a number of local bike hire outlets in the region to make life easy.
Cycling in McLaren Vale – Adelaide bike tour
Another option is a guided bike tour of the beautiful McLaren Vale wine region. About 1 hours drive south of Adelaide, McLaren Vale is a seaside wine region of great beauty, and well worth discovering. World class wine is regularly produced from some of Australia’s best know wine makers from this region. McLaren Vale is essentially split into 2, with a hilly area to the east toward the Adelaide Hills, and the McLaren Vale flats area leading down to the Southern Ocean beaches. And to top it off, there is the Shiraz Trail, a paved off road path perfect for cycling through the scenic vineyards.
