Bridge on the Warburton Rail Trail Now Open
A new bridge has been opened on the Warburton Rail Trail, meaning cyclists can ride over the busy and dangerous Maroondah Highway. This vital link in the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail now makes a cycling excursion for all riders, including families and novice riders, a possibility.
Tour de Vines has been wanting to operate weekend rides on the Warburton Rail Trail for some time but the road crossing was dangerous and interrupted the ride. Tour de Vines owner Damian Cerini:
“This bridge means we can now put itineraries together along this rail trail without having to worry about traffic and road crossings. We are looking to run a weekend tour from Lilydale to Warburton and back, stopping into the many delicious gourmet wineries and food outlets along the way. Stay tuned!”.
The Warburton Rail Trail is a beautiful cycle. Mostly flat and in excellent condition, it’s a pleasant ride, although diversions to reach any of the more famous wineries will encounter hills. It is certainly possible to cycle from Lilydale to Warburton, stay overnight in the lovely village, and return the next day, albeit retracing your route but of course with a different view!
