New Bridge on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail
As the longest rail trail in Australia, the 161-kilometer Brisbane Valley Rail Trail offers an exhilarating off-road riding experience, complete with both scenic routes and challenging sections.
One of the more demanding parts of the trail used to be the Logan Creek crossing, just north of Coominya. Riders had to navigate a narrow track beneath an old trestle bridge, cross the creek (if water levels were low enough), and then ascend the opposite side. However, a newly constructed bridge now allows cyclists to glide effortlessly over the picturesque waterway, free from loose gravel, sharp turns, and other hazards.
Funded by Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads, this bridge was built using the original concrete anchor footings. It replaces the deteriorating timber structure with a wide deck and new safety rails, enhancing the safety and enjoyment of the ride.
The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail follows the historic Brisbane-Toowoomba railway line, taking cyclists through breathtaking farmlands, lush forests, and charming country towns in inland southern Queensland. While improvements over the years have made the trail more accessible for riders of all skill levels, it remains an adventure trail, so visitors should be prepared for various terrain, including a number of normally passable creek crossings.
According to Rail Trails Australia, the Department of Transport and Main Roads has plans to reconstruct another bridge along the trail this financial year.
