Brisbane Valley Rail Trail Cycling Tour – Self Guided

Duration:
3 Days

Difficulty: Medium

$1449

At 161kms in length the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail is the longest rail trail in Australia. This self-guided cycling tour will have you riding the best sections of this fantastic Queensland getaway, whilst taking care of those pesky logistics for you.

There are some stunning bridges, some we cross and some we go under. Being elevated at the northern end, there are terrific views. It’s undeniably outback Queensland but we have found a couple of gourmet secrets so we do get to enjoy quality meals.

Cycling the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail is a little bit of an adventure. It’s still on the easy side in terms of distances and there are no major uphill sections. The distances are achievable for most riders, and we start this tour at the northern end so it’s largely downhill. Although short sections near the towns are paved, the majority of the trail is either hard-packed gravel or a wide dirt track, so this is the element that some beginner riders find slightly more challenging. There are also a number of very short but step river bed crossings. Some riders walk these, or go slowly on your brakes, which will mean most likely walking up the other side.  But these are very short and can be great fun for riders above beginner level. For these reasons we recommend well-equipped mountain bikes (you can BYO bike or ask about our renting).

It wouldn’t be Queensland without some great pubs and iconic outback buildings to visit. It all makes for a wonderful getaway on this Brisbane Valley Rail Trail cycling tour.

Self Guided Cycling Tours

Self-guided cycling tours do require participants to be adaptable and able to solve issues whilst on tour. On-call support is included in your tour, but it is expected that you will know how to repair punctures and make minor adjustments to gears, handlebars and seats if required, and if bringing your own bike, then this is expected. For anything more serious, we will be able to assist with a call to our 1300 665 330 number at any time during your trip.  You should be able to read a map and follow directions, either on a device or a printed map (supplied), and you have a good sense of direction. Getting a little bit lost or having to ask locals for directions is all part of choosing to travel on a self-guided basis. The maps and directions provided to you are updated regularly and tailored to your specific trip (hotels, restaurants are noted and marked). If this is something that makes you nervous or uncertain, or if you know for sure that you can’t fix a puncture or aren’t confident reading a map, then we do recommend our extensive range of small group fully guided tours where all the stress of navigation, bike maintenance and logistics is all done for you. However, if comfortable with this, then the freedom of a self-guided cycling trip is wonderful, and once confident, can be the preferred choice across our range of cycling tours.

What happens to our luggage and purchases?

Luggage transfers are included on your tour. Please make sure you label your bags (luggage tags provided) and check with the property the best place to leave luggage for pick-up the following morning. We will happily pick up any purchases made from our included stops for you. Please mark these clearly with your name, and of course let our concierge know. These will be ready for collection at the end of your tour.

How do we store our bikes overnight?

You will need to store your bikes overnight; most properties have a dedicated bike storage locker/room. Please ensure you check with the property at check-in and store your bike appropriately. If you have an eBike you will need to charge this overnight. Chargers will be waiting for you, so please remove the battery and charge this in your room.

Do you send vouchers for the meal bookings?

We don't send or provide vouchers for included meal bookings. Each venue has been booked in your name on behalf of Tour de Vines, at a time and day and inclusions (eg entree & main) as stipulated in your itinerary. Please arrive on time as per the booking and if you are running late or have other issues you can either let the venue know directly or contact us on our after hours number (1300 665 330).

Would it please be possible to buy a gel seat cover for the bike that I am allocated?

Our bikes don’t come with gel seat covers, nor do we supply them. However, you are more than welcome to bring your own if you would like to. Most gel pads will stretch (or come with draw strings) to fit any size of seat cover

Do you provide support for our personal bikes if we get a puncture and don't have tubes, for example?

Regarding any issues with your personal bikes, we will of course provide support for any major mechanical issues. Just give us a call on 1300 665 330. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide support for any minor issues when bringing along your own bike such as repairing punctures and replacement tubes.

What happens if it pours with rain? (I’m not talking about a passing shower or light drizzle) but a day of full rain?

All our tours include support - either on tour or on call - so help is never far away. Our local concierge is on hand throughout your tour with us and can call in the support bus at any time if required. We would transport you to lunch, or a wine tasting or similar so your tour can continue as required. Little or occasional showers are not reason for Tour de Vines to cancel a tour.

What happens if it's too hot to ride?

Some of the regions we travel in can get hot. If a guest books a tour, say, in Victoria for February the expectation is that it will be warm if not hot. The general weather policy below will vary depending on the time of year, the tour and prevailing conditions. A decision is made based on all available factors so there is no hard and fast temperature that triggers a tour cancellation.

Weather Policy

Tours are outdoor active in nature so there is some expectation that conditions will vary including rain or very warm weather and guests should be ready for that. Our general weather policy for multi day tours: If it is impossible or dangerous to ride we can either cancel your tour and provide a refund (if prior to arriving, Tour de Vines to make this call) or our support services will ensure you are safe and still get to enjoy all the inclusions of the tour without any risk if you have already arrived and the weather turns. This might mean using our support vehicles to transport guests to lunch or other venues and to accommodation to avoid cycling in dangerous conditions.

Some Terms and Conditions:

  1. Cycling has inherent risks and dangers. It involves a degree of physical exertion and physical risk. Please be aware of the terms and conditions relating to your undertaking of a cycling tour with Tour de Vines.
  2. If you cancel your booking inside a defined time period, you may lose your deposit and/or your total booking payment. Time periods vary depending on the type of tour so please refer to the terms and conditions online.
  3. If you make changes to your booking after we have sent you this itinerary and all your tour elements are confirmed, you will be subject to additional fees. Changes include but aren’t limited to change of dates, change to number of guests.
  4. We strongly recommend travel insurance to cover both medical and property costs that may be incurred. Accidents do happen when travelling and whilst we have insurance cover for negligence, we are unable to cover damage, loss or theft or medical costs in all instances.
  5. If it is impossible or dangerous to ride, we can either cancel your tour and provide a refund (if prior to arrival) or our support services will ensure you are safe and still get to enjoy all the tour inclusions without the risk if you have already arrived and the weather turns.

For further details on these terms and all our tour terms and conditions please refer to our detailed Terms and Conditions on our website at: http://tourdevines.com.au/terms-and-conditions/ We’d also love to see any photos you take whilst on tour so please tag any pics you post on social media with #tourdevines or join our Instagram or Facebook pages and post your pics directly to our social pages.

Are bikes available?

You are welcome to BYO your bike (recommend mountain bike style as some sections of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail are hard-packed gravel with loose dirt and stones).

Or you are welcome to hire from our quality fleet of mountain bikes, and we have e-mountain bikes too!

See Dates & Prices above for the latest rates.

What accommodation is used?

The accommodation is in Esk for 2 nights and will depend on your specific dates and how many are in your group, but our regular property is the Wivenhoe Motor Inn (or equivalent depending on availability).

How hard is the riding & what is the distance?

The cycling on this Brisbane Valley Rail Trail tour is graded as easy. The only element that might challenge beginner riders is the occasional bumpy surface (and a sore touche!).

Day 1 of riding from Yarraman is largely downhill and flat and covers approximately 40+kms, with the option to ride the full length from Yarraman to Esk, making it a 94 km ride.

Day 2 from Esk to Fernvale is almost all flat and is 40 km.

We have a fleet of e-bikes available to hire if you have any doubts about cycling. They are such great fun and will make life very enjoyable on this ride!
