Self Guiding
Self-guided cycling tours do require participants to be adaptable and able to solve issues whilst on tour. On-call support is included in your tour, but it is expected that you will know how to repair punctures and make minor adjustments to gears, handlebars and seats if required, and if bringing your own bike, then this is expected. For anything more serious, we will be able to assist with a call to our 1300 665 330 number at any time during your trip. You should be able to read a map and follow directions, either on a device or a printed map (supplied) and you have a good sense of direction. Getting a little bit lost, or having to ask locals for directions is all part of choosing to travel on a self-guided basis. The maps and directions provided to you are updated regularly and tailored to your specific trip (hotels, restaurants are noted and marked). If this is something that makes you nervous or uncertain, or if you know for sure that you can’t fix a puncture or aren’t confident reading a map, then we do recommend our extensive range of small group fully guided tours where all the stress of navigation, bike maintenance and logistics is all done for you. However, if comfortable, then the freedom of a self-guided cycling trip is wonderful, and once confident, can be the preferred choice across our range of cycling tours.
What happens if it pours with rain?
Whilst this tour is self-guided, it includes on-call support so help is never far away. Our local concierge is on hand throughout your tour with us and can call in the support bus at any time if required (you are correct, most not if just a light shower). We would transport you to lunch, or a wine tasting or similar so your tour can continue as required.
If it is impossible or dangerous to ride, we can either cancel your tour and provide a refund (if prior to arriving, TDV to make this call) or our support services will ensure you are safe and still get to enjoy all the inclusions of the tour without any risk if you have already arrived and the weather turns.
What are the costs for bike hire?
You are welcome to BYO bike or hire quality bikes with your tour.
Our Trek FX hybrid style bikes have rear racks, a small bag for incidentals (we collect any purchases you make) and water bottle holder and are a bargain for only $10 to hire!
E-bikes are an additional $25 and have rear racks and water bottle holders.
Bike hire can be booked online on this page (after selecting your dates, the next screen will give you the option to add bike hire).
How hard is the riding & what is the distance?
This tour is graded as easy.
The recommended cycling distance is about 38kms iwth no uphill riding.
The cycling is downhill on the Murray to Mountains rail trail for 16kms, then flat on back country roads.
This tour is self-guided, so you can cycle as far and wide as you like if desired, as long as you keep to the timed bookings per the itinerary.
If in any doubt, we strongly recommend booking an e-bike, which is great fun and will ensure your day is enjoyable.
