Self Guided Cycling
Self-guided cycling tours do require participants to be adaptable and able to solve issues whilst on tour. On-call support is included in your tour, but it is expected that you will know how to repair punctures and make minor adjustments to gears, handlebars and seats if required, and if bringing your own bike, then this is expected. For anything more serious, we will be able to assist with a call to our 1300 665 330 number at any time during your trip. You should be able to read a map and follow directions, either on a device or a printed map (supplied) and you have a good sense of direction. Getting a little bit lost, or having to ask locals for directions is all part of choosing to travel on a self-guided basis. The maps and directions provided to you are updated regularly and tailored to your specific trip (hotels, restaurants are noted and marked). If this is something that makes you nervous or uncertain, or if you know for sure that you can’t fix a puncture or aren’t confident reading a map, then we do recommend our extensive range of small group fully guided tours where all the stress of navigation, bike maintenance and logistics is all done for you. However, if comfortable with this, then the freedom of a self-guided cycling trip is wonderful, and once confident, can be the preferred choice across our range of cycling tours.
What is the best time of year weather wise?
There are 2 main seasons for travel to this region, although anytime works for us, depending on what you like. These seasons are:
- Early Oct - December: warming days, still cool nights, maybe some rain with the change of seasons.
- Late Feb through to end May: warm to hot in Feb, then cooling to cold in May. Lovely in March or April with the autumn colours coming out in full show in May (see here). It can get cold with some rain possible.
Of course, the more popular times are busier and accommodation can be limite,d especially for groups.
What is the (bad) weather policy?
Whilst this tour is self-guided, it includes on-call support so help is never far away. Our local concierge is on hand throughout your tour and you can call in the support bus if required. If the weather turns foul and you have started your trip already, we would transport you to lunch, or a wine tasting or similar so your tour can continue as required.
Our general weather policy for multi day tours is: If it is impossible or dangerous to ride we can either cancel your tour and provide a refund (if prior to arriving, TDV to make this call as early as possible) or our support services will ensure you are safe and still get to enjoy all the inclusions of the tour without any risk if you have already arrived and the weather turns.
Safety is our number one priority, so if there is any danger to you, or our staff, a trip will be cancelled. Having said that, it is very rare for this to happen.
Are airport transfers available?
Your pick up from Bright timing is totally flexible. Check out is 10 am (standard), but we can collect you anytime to ensure you reach any flights you have booked. You will need to allow 1 1/2 hrs driving. This is an additional 30 minutes from the included drop off, which is at Beechworth, so an additional fee of $60 would apply (one way, single person). Alternatively, there is an infrequent bus service from Beechworth to Albury and you can catch a taxi from the bus drop off in Albury to the airport.
What accommodation is used?
Accommodation does vary depending on your dates and group size, but as a guide, we use:
- Beechworth – Armour Motor Inn, Beechworth on Bridge or upgrade to Freeman on Ford B&B or similar
- Myrtleford - Motel on Alpine or upgrade to Panoramia Villas
- Bright - Bright on Track, Bright Colonial or upgrade to Bright Bliss or similar
Accommodation is not pre-booked for self-guided tours, so we advise booking as early as possible to ensure we can secure preferred accommodation.
Are bikes included?
You are welcome to BYO bikes or you can hire from our fleet of bikes.
Choose from the following (prices correct at time of writing and may change, you can book bikes online and prices will be shown as you progress in the booking):
- Trek FX hybrid bikes: $100
- Velectrix Urban E-bikes $150
All bikes come with water bottle cages (water bottles also supplied), rear racks and optional small bags (panniers) to save you lugging a backpack around.
We pick up and drop off your bikes for you (also for BYO) and have a repair and/or replacement guarantee on our hire bikes so your tour is never interrupted.
