A 6-day self-guided bike tour of South Australia through the Barossa, Clare Valley & Adelaide Hills regions. Ride the brilliant rail trails of this bike-friendly state, whilst being fully supported with all your logistics taken care of.

The rail trails on this bike tour include the Riesling Rail Trail in the Clare Valley, the Barossa Trail & the Amy Gillett Rail Trail in the Adelaide Hills.

What a handy convenience that these rail trails all run through famous food and wine regions, and you will certainly get to experience the gourmet delights on offer.

The cycling on this tour is graded as easy and could be completed by even a novice rider. Of course, e-assist bikes are available to hire (as are regular hybrid-style bikes) or you can BYO.

On this self-guided cycling tour, you have the option to choose your preferred travel dates (subject to availability). Enjoy the freedom of going self-guided whilst knowing all the logistics are taken care of. It is worth noting, however there is some travel required between each of the regions. Tour de Vines is able to provide transport services (again subject to availability), which is ideal for groups.

*This same itinerary plus an extra day cycling in McLaren Vale, is offered as a fully guided and supported tour on scheduled dates, small groups of 10 with local guides, see our guided tour option here

Self Guided Cycling Tours

Self-guided cycling tours do require participants to be adaptable and able to solve issues whilst on tour. On-call support is included in your tour, but it is expected that you will know how to repair punctures and make minor adjustments to gears, handlebars and seats if required, and if bringing your own bike, then this is expected. For anything more serious, we will be able to assist with a call to our 1300 665 330 number at any time during your trip. You should be able to read a map and follow directions, either on a device or a printed map (supplied) and have a good sense of direction. Getting a little bit lost or having to ask locals for directions is all part of choosing to travel on a self-guided basis. The maps and directions provided to you are updated regularly and tailored to your specific trip (hotels, restaurants are noted and marked). If this is something that makes you nervous or uncertain, or if you know for sure that you can’t fix a puncture or aren’t confident reading a map, then we do recommend our extensive range of small group fully guided tours where all the stress of navigation, bike maintenance and logistics is all done for you. However, if comfortable with this, then the freedom of a self-guided cycling trip is wonderful, and once confident, can be the preferred choice across our range of cycling tours.

*This same itinerary is offered as a fully guided and supported tour on scheduled dates, small groups of 10 with local guides, see our guided tour option here.

Is transport included?

There is a requirement on this bike tour to transfer between Adelaide, Barossa, Clare and McLaren, where the rail trails you will ride are located.

You can choose to self-drive between regions (ideal for couples or small groups) or Tour de Vines can provide transport for an additional fee (ideal for larger groups, say 6 or more, as the fee is a flat fee regardless of the number of passengers).

If self-driving, bikes are arranged to be collected in each location, so you do not need to carry bikes with you.

Book online or see Dates/Prices for more.

Are bikes included?

Being a self-guided tour, we have many guests who prefer to use their own bikes. Therefore, bikes aren't included as standard in the tour.

Quality bikes are available to hire, including electric assist (e-bikes), for an additional fee.

What accommodation is used?

Accommodation does vary depending on your specific dates and group numbers, but as a guide, we use:

  • Adelaide - Playford Hotel (1st & 5th nights)
  • Barossa - Weintal Hotel/Tanunda Cottages
  • Clare - Clare Valley Country Club
  • Hahndorf - The Manna of Hahndorf Apartments

Accommodation upgrading is available on request but is limited, particularly in the regions outside of Adelaide and is very much subject to group size and dates.
